History meets creativity at The Station Arts Centre
A journey to experience creativity may start in Tillsonburg, where one of the county’s most recognizable heritage buildings continues welcoming visitors more than a century after it first opened.
Built in 1879 as a Great Western Railway station, today’s Station Arts Centre has experienced several remarkable transformations. Once a busy transportation hub, it is now a destination where creativity is welcomed every day and home to four groups and 200 members.
Its careful restoration is a story of community determination. Members of the Tillsonburg District Craft Guild devoted years to preserving and expanding the historic railway buildings, ensuring they would continue serving the public in a completely new way. Today, two beautifully restored stations stand together as one vibrant cultural centre that honours both Oxford County's railway heritage and its artistic future.
Step inside and it’s easy to understand why visitors linger. Light-filled galleries showcase rotating exhibitions by local and regional artists. An artisan gift shop features handcrafted work created by local makers. 
Pottery studios buzz with activity while in-house groups gather to create, learn and share ideas.
Outside, the building’s distinctive architecture and its place along Oxford County’s Barn Quilt Trail make it a destination worth exploring even before you walk through the front doors. Then inside, you'll discover something even more memorable—a creative community that welcomes visitors just as warmly as passengers were welcomed here generations ago.
Ingersoll’s creative legacy
Some artistic communities happen almost overnight. Others are built over decades. The Ingersoll Creative Arts Centre belongs firmly in the second category.
Founded in 1972 by a small group of residents who wanted to strengthen the arts in their community, the Centre has grown into one of Oxford County’s most established creative organizations. It’s a hub for six artist groups, including quilting, painting/drawing, rug hooking, fibre arts, pottery and mixed media, with almost 300 members.
Through volunteer dedication, community fundraising and an unwavering belief that art should be accessible to everyone, the Centre has expanded from its modest beginnings into a thriving home for artists of all ages.
Today, visitors will find much more than gallery walls. Potters shape functional ceramics while painters experiment with new techniques. Fibre artists gather around shared tables. Rug hookers preserve traditional craftsmanship while the Oxford Quilters Guild continues a rich quilting tradition that has connected makers across the region for decades.
The Centre’s exhibitions change throughout the year, giving every visit a fresh perspective on local talent. Classes invite newcomers to try painting, pottery and fibre arts, while members continue developing their skills within a supportive, collaborative environment.
Whether browsing handcrafted artwork, registering for a workshop or simply stopping in to admire an exhibition, visitors experience a place where creativity has been nurtured for more than 50 years and continues to flourish.
Clay, Community and New Traditions
If Oxford County’s artistic history stretches back generations, Woodstock's The Kiln Room represents the exciting future of that story.
Founder HollyJo opened the studio after searching for something she couldn't find herself in Woodstock—a welcoming creative community where people could gather, make pottery and build meaningful relationships. The idea resonated immediately.
Since opening in July 2023, The Kiln Room has become much more than a pottery studio. It has evolved into a place where strangers become classmates, classmates become friends and creativity becomes a reason to gather.
Visitors can try pottery wheel workshops, experiment with hand-building techniques or register for multi-week courses that build confidence alongside ceramic skills. Seasonal workshops produce everything from mugs to planters, and festive holiday creations.
The atmosphere is wonderfully relaxed. Nobody expects perfection. Instead, instructors encourage curiosity, experimentation and the simple satisfaction of making something with your own hands.
HollyJo says people often come into the studio convinced they're “not creative,” but clay has a way of changing that. They begin trusting themselves, embracing imperfections, and taking pride in creating something with their own hands. Watching that transformation happen is incredibly rewarding for her.
And just as meaningful are the friendships that form around the tables. People come for pottery, but they leave with connections, encouragement, and a sense of belonging. That’s always been the heart of The Kiln Room. The Kiln Room has also embraced creative partnerships throughout Oxford County. Collaborative experiences pair pottery with local breweries, lavender farms and other community destinations, inviting visitors to combine hands-on creativity with memorable day trips through the region.
It's a reminder that in Oxford County, art rarely exists in isolation. It naturally connects with local businesses, experiences and the communities that surround them.
More Places to Create, Learn and Connect
Oxford County’s creative spirit is also evident in other public spaces, like The Woodstock Art Gallery. It celebrates local and regional artists through exhibitions while offering engaging programming for children, youth and adults throughout the year.
At the Norwich Library branch, Creative Connections provides an informal gathering space where artists simply bring their current projects, settle in together and enjoy the inspiration that naturally comes from creating alongside others.
The Oxford Weavers and Spinners continue preserving traditional fibre arts through demonstrations, community events and exhibitions that celebrate craftsmanship and heritage.
Independent businesses such as Commonplace Books in Ingersoll also contribute to the county's growing creative culture, regularly supporting artists, makers and community events. It hosts poetry events and panels for local authors. For both established and aspiring writers, Commonplace Books is an inspiring and nurturing space.
Together, these organizations create an artistic network that extends across Oxford County, making creativity part of day-to-day life.
