WOODSTOCK MUSEUM
Originally built in 1853, as the Town Hall and Market House, it was built in an Italianate architectural style. This style, based upon the country villas of northern Italy, was very popular in Britain during the early 1800's. Woodstock's strongly British heritage made it a natural choice for the town's most important building. Over the years, it has served as the town's market, public assembly hall, fire hall, police lock-up, permanent meeting place of Council, municipal offices and mayor's office. In 1948, it became the new Oxford County Museum. In 1955, the Historic Sites and Monuments Board of Canada recommended that the Woodstock Town Hall be designated as a "structure of national historic importance" because..."it is a fine example of a colonial adaptation of a British town hall and long association with the political and social life of Oxford County". Woodstock Museum was initiated by the Oxford Historical Society in 1897.. Today it continues to collect, exhibit and teach in the original site.
