ROLPH STREET PUBLIC SCHOOL
83 Rolph Street, Tillsonburg, ON This structure was built in 1912, Rolph Street Public School is the oldest school structure standing in Tillsonburg today. It replaced a former building known as the "Tillsonburg Public Schools", built on this same location. The original white brick structure with its spire and lancet windows was built in 1872 and was one of the first schools in the area to incorporate the new requirements set out in the Public School Act of 1871. In 1886, that school was enlarged to house a kindergarten and a high school, but by 1911, was demolished and replaced by the much larger red brick Edwardian styled building of today. In 1951, the school would become known as Rolph Street Public School when a second public school was built on Tillson Avenue. In 1989, an addition was added to the north end of the school to house both a Library and Gymnasium. To accommodate the growing community, there are now six pubic schools in Tillsonburg, including a High School, a Middle School and four elementary schools.
