Hayward, Robert 'Bob'
1927 - 1961
Bob was raised on the family farm located on Lot 5, Concession 5 of West Zorra. He attended Cody's School and Embro Continuation School. Bob was always interested in speed. He built and drove many cars and boats. Bob started as a mechanic on Miss Supertest II in 1957 and moved into the driver's seat in the spring of 1958. He supervised the building of the Miss Supertest III during the winter of 1958-59, in the Thompson barn in London, Ontario. The boat was designed and built to be a challenger in the Harmsworth Trophy race held in the United States for many years. Bob brought international fame to Canada, and to this area when he drove the world champion speedboat Miss Supertest II to victory, winning the Harmsworth (British International) Trophy August 27, 1959 in Detroit, USA. He successfully defended the title in 1960 & 1961 in Picton, Ontario. He was killed in the Silver Cup Race, on the Detroit River, driving Miss Supertest II on September 10, 1961 at the age of 34. A cairn is erected to his memory on the former Hayward farm at the corner of County Road 6 and Cody's sideroad.
