Eckstein, Henry
1819 - 1903
HenryEckstein.jpg Henry Eckstein was the founder of Tavistock. He was born in Hesse-Darmstadt, Germany. He came to Tavistock and worked at wood-cutting and other seasonal jobs and eventually built the first log hotel in the village. The building was eventually torn down. In 1854, the Commercial Hotel was built. His business thrived when the railway passed through town. Henry rented the hotel to Charles Mohr and moved to a large farm that he had owned for sometime. The farm passed through many hands and eventually was sold to Tavistock Produce. Henry died at the age of 84.
