Chadwick, Casey
1859 - 1907
Cassie "Betsy" Chadwick, born Elizabeth Bigley, at first glance seemed an unlikely candidate for a world class con artist. From an early age, Cassie's teachers commented that her imagination was above average. Betsy loved the ostentatious lifestyle and would do anything to sustain it. She managed to swindle millions of dollars from banks and creditors in her lifetime. In one of her outlandish schemes she moved in with her sister and while she was away, mortgaged her sister's goods as if they were her own. She moved to an exclusive area of Cleveland and married a doctor. He was one of many husbands. In 1985, CBC television dramatized her escapades in "Love and Larceny". Cassie is laid to rest at the Anglican Cemetery off Vansittart Avenue in Woodstock. Doubts linger that the coffin was too light to contain a body. Could it be that Cassie had conned everyone once again?
